A 4-years' analysis of the meiofauna community of a dumping site for TiO2-waste off the Dutch coast OMA
Smol, N.; Huys, R.; Vincx, M..
Sublittoral meiofauna of 24 stations was monitored over 4 years (1984-1987) in and around a dumping site for TiO2- acid waste in the Southern Bight of the North Sea off the Dutch coast. The meiofauna was examined quantitatively and qualitatively with special reference to the nematode and the copepod community structure down to species level and to the trophic structure of the nematodes. Biological, sedimentological, geographical parameters and the concentration of several heavy metals were subject to multivariate statistical analysis and classification techniques to evaluate the impact of the TiO2- dumping activities. The meiofauna is dominated by nematodes, copepods, gastrotrichs and turbellarians. There is a...

A handy method for measuring meiobenthic respiration OMA
Moens, T.; Vierstraete, A.; Vanhove, S.; Verbeke, M.; Vincx, M..
Our current understanding of meiofaunal respiration rates, and especially of the way they are influenced by changing abiotic factors, is still far from complete. Meiofaunal respiration is traditionally measured using Cartesian divers or related manometric techniques, but these are extremely time-consuming and labour-consuming. We have evaluated the use of Strathkelvin polarographic electrode model 1302 and the O2 monitor model 781 in determining the O2 consumption of meiofaunal animals. Respiration rates obtained in this way of the terrestrial nematode <i>Caenorhabditis elegans</i> compared well with results obtained from Cartesian diver respirometry. Experiments with 3 estuarine nematode species...

A model of nematode dynamics in the Westerschelde Estuary OMA
Li, J.; Vincx, M.; Herman, P.M.J..
We developed a time dynamic model to investigate the temporal dynamics of nematode community in the brackish zone of the Westerschelde Estuary. The biomass of four nematode feeding groups observed from March 1991 to February 1992 is used to calibrate the model. Using environmental data as the input, the model predicts the temporal modification and interrelation of four nematode feeding groups. Nematodes achieve a dominant position in the community because of their lower loss rate (in respiration, excretion and natural death). Predators which are deposit-feeding macrobenthos control the variations of dominant nematodes, such as omnivores and non-selective deposit feeders. Food availability causes modification only for rare nematodes such as epigrowth...

A re-evaluation of marine nematode productivity OMA
Vranken, G.; Herman, P.M.J.; Vincx, M.; Heip, C.H.R..
Nematodes are the most abundant multicellular animals in marine sediments but their role in the benthos has not been properly quantified yet. In nearly all energy-flow budgets of marine systems their annual production P is given as about nine times their biomass B and their part in the total energy-flow is consequently estimated as anywhere between 3 and 30% of the total (carbon) input in the benthic system. Our laboratory experiments demonstrate that nematode productivity is much higher than P/B ~ 9 per year and may reach values of over 60 for bacterial grazers. To obtain more reliable estimates for field populations we propose a regression equation relating egg-to-egg development time Tmin to temperature (t) and adult female weight...

A seasonally varying biotope at Signy Island, Antarctic: implications for meiofaunal structure OMA
Vanhove, S.; Beghyn, M.; Van Gansbeke, D.; Bullough, L.W.; Vincx, M..
Under the typical high-latitude conditions of temperature, productivity and settlement of chlorophyll and phaeophytin to the sediment, many benthic organisms in the Antarctic show strong seasonal variation. Although meiofauna comprise an important component of the southpolar benthic ecosystem, our knowledge of them is limited. The metazoan meiofauna and the surrounding sediments were studied fortnightly for 18 mo in a shallow bay at Signy Island (Factory Cove, South Orkneys, Antarctica) to test whether and how the temporal variability of the environment influenced meiobenthos dynamics. By examination of the distribution of the abundance and biomass of the total community, the density of higher taxonomic groups, and of individual dominant nematode genera...

A state of the art on meiofaunal respiration and production OMA
Moens, T.; Vincx, M..
The aerobic respiration of meiofauna in general and of nematodes in particular is studied by means of manometric (Cartesian or related divers) or electrode-based (polarographic electrodes) techniques. The former allow highly accurate measurements on individual or small batches of nematodes, while the latter, less sensitive technique allows rapid and highly reproducible measurements under a variety of abiotic conditions.Nematode respiration is commonly described in a power relation R = aWb, where b averages 0.75 and a represents a measure of metabolic intensity. Published estimates of total nematode community respiration are scant, but seem to agree on an average value of 61...

Annual dynamics of meiobenthic communities in the Ligurian Sea (northwestern Mediterranean): preliminary results OMA
Danovaro, R.; Mees, J.; Vincx, M..
The dynamics of meiobenthic community were investigated on sandy sediments of the pilot station of Zoagli (Ligurian Sea) between January 1991 and January 1992. Meiofaunal densities ranged between 447 (April) and 3421 (July) ind./10 cm2. Nematodes were the dominant group comprising on the average 75 % of the total fauna. Harpacticoid copepods were the second most abundant group (from 1.7 to 55.3 %) followed by Turbellaria (on the average 5.5 % of total fauna) and Polychaeta (on average 1.2 % of total fauna). The importance of several environmental parameters (such as total organic matter, grain size and RPD depth) in structuring the meiobenthic community is discussed.

Benthos of a sublittoral sandbank in the Southern Bight of the North Sea: general considerations OMA
Willems, K.A.; Vanosmael, C.; Claeys, D.; Vincx, M.; Heip, C.H.R..
The benthic fauna of the Kwinte Bank, a linear sandbank in the Belgian coastal waters of the North Sea, was sampled on ten stations in September 1978. This sandbank shows a linear gradient from fine sandy sediments in the south to coarser sandy sediments in the north as a result of the tidal current pattern in the region. The influence of this gradient on macro- and meiofauna was studied. Diversity of polychaetes and harpacticoid copepods is correlated with median grain size of the sand fraction, diversity of nematodes is not. The influence of station location and sediment characteristics on density of all major macrobenthic groups is very outspoken, and linear density trends are common. This is not true for meiofauna in general and nematodes and copepods...

Carbon flows through meiobenthic nematodes in the Westerschelde Estuary OMA
Li, J.; Vincx, M.; Herman, P.M.J..
A time dynamic model was used to estimate carbon flows through nematodes in an intertidal benthic ecosystem in the Westerschelde Estuary, The Netherlands. The model calibrated the nematode biomass observed from March 1991 to February 1992. The forcing functions of the model included meiobenthos biomass, macrobenthos biomass, bacterial density, chlorophyll-a concentration, and other abiotic data such as temperature and day length. We estimate that the nematode population had a low level of standing stock 249 mg C m(-2), but a high level of carbon flow. It consumed 98 mg C m(-2) d(-1) and produced 22 mg C m(-2) d(-1). Defecation was 73 mg C m(-2) d(-1). Losses in respiration, excretion and natural death were only 3 mg C m(-2) d(-1). The annual P/B was 32 for...

Changes in the ratio of the sulcus acusticus area to the sagitta area of <i>Pomatoschistus minutus</i> and <i>P. lozanoi</i> (Pisces, Gobiidae) OMA
Arellano, R.V.; Hamerlynck, O.; Vincx, M.; Mees, J.; Hostens, K.; Gijselinck, W..
The <i>Pomatoschistus minutus</i> (Pallas) and <i>P. lozanoi</i> (de Buen) stock of the ebb-tidal delta of the former Grevelingen estuary was sampled monthly from September 1992 to October 1993. Sagittae were extracted and the areas of the sagitta and sulcus acusticus were measured with a digitizer. The frequency response and auditory threshold of these two sympatric goby species were determined from the ratio of the sulcus acusticus area to the sagitta area (S:O ratio). The S:O ratio of <i>P. minutus</i> increased while in <i>P. lozanoi</i> the S:O ratio was constant with increasing standard length. The average S:O ratio of <i>P. lozanoi</i> was significantly higher than that of <i>P....

Community structure and intertidal zonation of the macrobenthos on a macrotidal, ultra-dissipative sandy beach: summer-winter comparison OMA
Degraer, S.; Mouton, I.; De Neve, L.; Vincx, M..
Community structure and intertidal zonation of the macrobenthos on a macrotidal, ultra-dissipative beach were studied. On the beach of De Panne, Belgium, six transects perpendicular to the waterline (each with five stations) were sampled in September 1995 (summer) and March 1996 (winter). The 30 stations were distributed across the continuum from mean high water spring to mean low water spring in order to sample the macrobenthos at different levels of elevation. The 39 species found had total densities up to 5,500 ind m-2 in summer and 1,400 ind m-2 in winter. The highest densities were found in the spionid polychaetes <i>Scolelepis squamata</i> and <i>Spio filicornis</i>, the nephtyid...

Comparative study of the nematode communities on the southeastern Weddell Sea shelf and slope (Antarctica) OMA
Vanhove, S.; Arntz, W.E.; Vincx, M..
Nothing is known about the structure of free-living marine nematode communities in the high Antarctic. Our attempt at surveying this numerically most abundant meiobenthic taxon along the continental shelf and slope (200 to 2000 m) furnished information on generic, trophic and age composition in 2 regions in the Weddell Sea (Kapp Norvegia, 6 stations, 71-72°S, 12-13°W; Halley Bay, 11 stations, 74-75°S, 25-29°W). A total of 7300 nematode identifications to generic level were analyzed by means of a variety of statistical techniques. The spatial structure indicated the existence of 4 major nematode genus associations colonizing the upper slope, downslope, Halley shelf and a mixed habitat consisting of shelf break and Kapp Norvegia shelf. Dominated by genera...

Deep-sea meiofauna communities in Antarctica: structural analysis and relation with the environment OMA
Vanhove, S.; Wittoeck, J.; Desmet, G.; Van den Berghe, B.; Herman, R.; Bak, R.P.M.; Nieuwland, G.; Vosjan, J.H.; Boldrin, A.; Rabitti, S.; Vincx, M..
The metazoan meiofauna in the region off Kapp Norvegia, Antarctica (Weddell Sea: 71°S, 12°W), was collected from depths between 211 and 2080m. Total meiofaunal abundance ranged from 815 to 5122 ind. per 10 cm² and total biomass from 126 to 966 µg dwt per 10 cm². Nematodes dominated the samples (range 83 to 97%) followed by harpacticoid copepods, polychaetes and kinorhynchs. A typical skewed length frequency distribution was obtained with most nematodes in the 0.4 to 0.6 mm size-class. The meiofauna communities were primarily influenced by bathymetric depth and food availability (e.g. organic matter and microbiota), which in turn are suggested to be directly related to phytoplankton blooms and associated sedimentation pulses. Standing stock and distribution...

Different benthic size-compartments and their relationship to sediment chemistry in the deep Eurasian Arctic Ocean OMA
Kröncke, I.; Vanreusel, A.; Vincx, M.; Wollenburg, J.; Mackensen, A.; Liebezeit, G.; Behrends, B..
During the Arctic Expedition ARK VIII/3 (August to September 1991) with <i>RV Polarstern</i>, the macrofauna, meiofauna, Foraminifera, bacteria were sampled and sediment chemistry was determined at 13 stations along a transect from the Barents Sea slope across the deep Arctic Eurasian Basins towards the Lomonosov Ridge. Water depths ranged from 258 to 4427 m. In general, higher values for all benthic compartments as well as total organic carbon (TOC) and total hydrolysable amino acids (THAA) were recorded for the Barents Sea slope than for the deeper stations in the basins and the ridge slopes. The only significant correlation found was between macrofaunal abundance and depth. Bacterial and all faunal abundances as well as bacterial and...

Diversity of nematode assemblages along a Mediterranean deep-sea transect OMA
Soetaert, K.; Heip, C.H.R.; Vincx, M..
The diversity of the nematode assemblages along a Mediterranean transect off Calvi, Corsica, Mediterranean Sea (depth range 160 to 1220 m) was very high. There was no clear trend in species diversity with station depth, and diversity at the station located on the continental shelf was not markedly lower than that at the deep-sea stations. However, diversity decreased with increasing depth into the sediment. As with the macrofauna, nematode assemblages in the Mediterranean is explained by a slight dominance of some species, while no species are dominant in the Bay of Biscay. Generic (between-genus) diversity was much higher than the average species diversity within genera, indicating that the high overall species diversity was not caused by large numbers of...

Diversity of the nematode communities in the Southern Bight of the North Sea OMA
Vincx, M..
The nematode communities from 102 stations in the Southern Bight of the North Sea, sampled between 1972 and 1984, are examined. Overall, 456 species, belonging to 159 genera and 37 families were found. Sediment structure and chlorophyll a content were found to be determining environmental factors in the species composition of the nematode communities. Diversity is determined at different levels of the nematode community; <i>i.e</i>. species diversity of the whole community, species diversity of eight dominant families (Chromadoridae, Comesomatidae, Cyatholaimidae, Desmodoridae, Microlaimidae, Oncholaimidae, Thoracostomopsidae and Xyalidae), species diversity of the four feeding types, family diversity and trophic diversity within the whole...
